Salida was established in 1870. The largest unincorporated community in Stanislaus County, it sits just across the Stanislaus River from the similar community of Ripon, a city in San Joaquin County, incorporated in 1945, "where the Quality of Life shines like a small jewel in the middle of California's central San Joaquin Valley." The Salida Chamber of Commerce, led by Katherine Borges, seeks to "promote economic progress and quality of life to build a strong, independent, incorporated Salida", i.e. to have local control like Ripon.
