2026 PIT Count: Homelessness down in Sac City but up in the UnCity

The Point In Time (PIT) Count data for 2026 was released today. That's the biennial inventory by the Sacramento City and County Continuum of Care of people in our county who are homeless. Surprise, surprise! The data show that unsheltered homelessness is on the rise in the county's unincorporated territory. In fact, the number of unsheltered homeless individuals in the unincorporated area has more than doubled since two years ago, with 579 MORE unsheltered individuals. Meanwhile the City of Sacramento's unsheltered homeless population has decreased nearly 20%, with 590 LESS individuals.  Now, we don't know WHERE in the county's vast unincorporated area - the UnCity - the extra homeless individuals are, but look at those two numbers. Does it seem like maybe alot of the ones no longer found in the City of Sacramento are now found HERE? Hmm...the math says the numbers 579 and 590 are not very far apart. So, golly, gee, City of Sacramento, it sure LOOKS like much, if not almost all of the decrease in YOUR CITY'S homeless problem has caused an increase to OUR COMMUNITY'S homeless problem. And that's what our eyeballs have been telling us, so thanks, but no thanks. Across Sacramento County, unsheltered homelessness has grown by 6.6% since 2024, but in the UnCity it has grown by 103% over the same period. One wonders if our municipal overlords - the County Supervisors - are paying attention. Will they provide figures and analyses as to which unincorporated communities are carrying the load? Will they present solutions for the burdened parts of the UnCity? Or will things just roll along for another two years?

The graph shows projected changes from 2024 to 2026 for the City of Sacramento, Unincorporated County, and Surrounding Cities.
The 2026 PIT Count says the UnCity now hosts 27% of Sacramento County's unsheltered homeless population .
