"The sound of freedom"
You may have noticed some VERY loud noises in the sky recently. That's because the Marines have been using McClellan as a pit stop for their long-distance training misisons. The jets they used were F/ A - 18C Hornets, which provide close-in air support for ground troops. Besides using the airport for layovers and refueling, the military also still uses McClellan for repair and rework services provided at the airport. Before the base was closed, it was a several-times-daily experience to have jets like this flying low over Fulton Avenue. The noise was usually tolerated as "the sound of freedom.
This F/A-18C Hornet stopped over at McClellan recently enroute from its base at MCAS Miramar in San Diego County (the setting for"Top Gun").
