San Juan School District's transition to by-district representation

The San Juan Unified School District covers a huge area from Arden Arcade eastward to Orangevale. The School District's Trustees have always been elected at-large. Historically that arrangement has been inclined to emphasize schools  in the "better" neighborhoods, generally east of Watt Avenue. The District is now proposing to switch to by-District representation, which can give local communities like Arden Arcade more of a voice in the district's affairs. Citizens are invited to participate in the process of mapping the districts (see the schedule below).

The District will hold its next pubic hearing on the subject at its Board meeting this Tuesday, June 15th. People who attend can present testimony then. The meeting will be held at the District's offices at 3738 Walnut Avenue in Carmichael. For people unable to go to the meeting, there is a very easy way to provide testimony: go to the https://www.sanjuan.edu/boardmeeting and click on "submit a written comment". If that's your choice, be sure to get it done before 6pm on the 15th.
